Do you have pain that has not responded to previous treatments or you only seem to get short-term relief? Do you have the same injury return with activity? Gunn IMS or Acupuncture may be the treatment you need.

Gunn IMS

Gunn IMS is a method of assessing and treating neuropathic pain, a common cause of myofascial pain syndrome. The Gunn IMS method applies acupuncture needles (small solid needles) into tight bands of muscle that have been made tight by unhealthy nerves. The needle can be directed into the tight bands of muscle and/or they can be inserted into muscles near the spine where the nerve root (that supplies information to the peripheral muscle) may be compressed and irritated. The short/tight muscle will often “twitch” or “grasp” the needle producing a momentary deep cramping sensation.

Following the application of the needle the body may respond in a few different ways:

  • The stretch receptor in the muscle is stimulated, producing a relaxation reflex and lengthening of the stimulated muscle.

  • The needle puncture causes a small injury that stimulates an inflammatory response, increasing blood flow to the needled area and resulting in a natural healing response.

  • The needling creates an electrical potential in the muscle that improves the functioning of the nerve that supplies the muscle.

Ideally, with successive Gunn IMS applications the source of nerve compression can be released and the nerve can function optimally again. This will, in time, improve the pain and symptoms of the patient since the nerve will be providing good “communication” to the muscles, and they will not be neuropathically shortened. Most patients remain pain free after the series of Gunn IMS treatment is completed, whereas some patients will intermittently benefit from maintenance sessions.

The number of treatment sessions required depends on several factors including the length of time the injury has persisted, the health of the patients’ nerves, the age of the individual and the general health of the patient.

Gunn IMS practitioners have been trained and certified to assess and treat using this method. They are able to recognize neuropathic pain and understand safe needling practices.

 Contemporary Medical Acupuncture

Contemporary medical acupuncture is a treatment approach that attempts to bridge traditional Chinese medicine with western medical practices. It is based on current concepts of anatomy and neurophysiology.

It involves the insertion of small solid needles into specific points / areas in the body based on anatomy.

The goals of contemporary medical acupuncture include:

  • Reduction of pain.

  • Increase in blood flow to a specific area (for faster healing).

  • Reduction of inflammation (reduced congestion).

  • Reduction in muscular tension.

  • Increased neural connection / function to a specific area/muscle.

Contemporary medical acupuncture is most often combined with manual therapy and exercise therapy. It is integrated into the physiotherapy treatment session.
